Module 1: Business Environmental Profile

Introduction of the green business club to the members: main purpose of the meeting National coordinator has presented the main objectives of the RECP demonstration component, as well as the main purpose of the Green club – benefits for the SMEs include reduction of costs in terms of material input, reduction of energy and water expenses, possibilities of reduction of waste and leakage within the production cycle. Bread, carpet production, shoe production, cheese, nickel production, auto service SMEs were present to the green club meeting in Hrazdan.

Dshkhuhi Sahakyan has introduced the benefits of the RECP to be introduced during the sessions of the Green clubs. The package of RECP Green club, including the evaluation forms, RECP primer, modules on RECP environmental profile were introduced. During the session examples of waste and by-product use were presented to the listeners, for example business case on bread (lavash) production where returned bread was used to produce crushed paqsimat (crushed bread to be used in the cooking).

Business cases on energy efficiency were introduced to the SMEs, including possibilities of using renewable energy sources and reduction of costs within SMEs, technology change within the production cycles, etc.

Waste reduction or alternative, innovative use of waste was introduced and discussed during the meeting.

Undertaking business means facing and calculating the risks of business start-ups. Risks are lack of support to the local SMEs, business support programs. Participants have mentioned the risks, as well as lack of assistance from state for business start-ups.

SME participants showed their increasing interest in the topics and issues raised during the workshop relating to organizational various sectors in which improvements and adjustments can be made to increase efficiency, decrease costs and gain more consumer interest towards the products and services.

Hrazdan RECP club SME feedback and questions raised:

  • The producers (SMEs) of Hrazdan to consider non waste/recycling options within their production cycle,
  • RECP as a key effective mechanism to shorten the emissions of CO2, using energy efficiency and GHG emissions by business sector
  • Lots of raw materials and other products are being wasted, and are thrown away. RECP is called to support re-use of the wasted material
  • Pollution – waste burning, air pollution, lack of awareness and knowledge on waste management and recycling
  • No funding opportunities and other motivational mechanisms for SMEs to invest with obtainable conditions for going green and decreasing the environmental damage (less pollution/emissions, wastes, chemicals)
  • Lack of existing infrastructure and up to date technologies/financial constraints
  • RECP can serve as a methodology and practice in prevention of chemical pollution and accumulation of waste, also including reduction of air, water and other types of pollution occurring throughout production cycles in industries.

SME representatives also shared with their business management experience. According to them they are more or less familiar with innovative energy efficiency solutions, mainly about LED lightening, but they are still not applying these innovations with a large scale to their business administrative buildings and areas, as they do not possess calculated data on energy saving for comparison and decision making. So, it was added that, later on, by the help of RECP audits done by national experts the data will be calculated and recommendations will come out accordingly.

Most of the participants raised issues related to lack of financing. According to them most of the technological, innovative changes are not made because they are lacking in financial means, funding. They also mentioned that in case of having proper financial means they would accept the recommendations done by RECP experts.

The meeting was summarized and the participants expressed their willingness to gain more information and knowledge on better business management in terms of resource efficiency and cleaner production.
