RECP 5th Green Club Workshop on the main Module on ‘’Chemicals and Hazardous Waste and Emissions’’

The 5th Green Club workshop took place on 8 of July, 2016 in the City Hall of Hrazdan city, RA. The main aim of the training was to present the topic on ‘’Chemicals and Hazardous Waste and Emissions” in the frames of RECP for Small and Medium Business enterprises foreseen in the frames of the 5th Green Club Module.

The workshop was attended by RECP national coordinator Ms. Nune Harutyunyan, RECP national facilitator Ms. Dshkhuhi Sahakyan, RECP work team and SMEs of Hrazdan City. Project national coordinator Ms. Nune Harutyunyan presented the achievements and issues of the previous Module 4. She also answered to the participants` questions presenting also the topic of the day and the objectives.

National facilitator Ms. Sahakyan presented in details the self-assessment results in the Green Club member organizations, emphasizing the main gaps and support needs as well as the results:

  • Waste baseline profile and indicators

–      Understanding use of materials and generation of waste

  • Major materials users and sources of waste
    • Waste diagnosis
    • What are the main causes for high materials’ consumption and waste generation?
    • Where are materials lost?
    • What are the costs of material losses and waste streams?

Later the topic of the day was presented, Module 5 ‘’Chemicals and Hazardous Waste and Emissions”.

The workshop covered the environmental burden of wastes and costs of materials and waste, diagnosis of material uses and waste generation. There was an overview of the business concerns related to chemical use, hazardous waste and emissions in the companies, particularly, cost to business, risks to business, impacts on human health and environment. Relevant national issues were also highlighted:

  • Chemicals are part of our daily life. Their intensive use in production process end operations will increase even more due to  current trends
  • Chemicals are at the origin of hazardous waste and emissions and represent a major source of pollution and accidents
  • Chemicals are expensive materials and their efficient use contributes to direct and indirect cost reduction
  • Responsible use of chemicals protect employees health and  minimize the risk of accidents, securing the business and increasing its social responsibility

During the active discussions with Green Club member organizations main issues existing in the organizations were raised.

  • Chemical risk reduction
  • Chemical investment reduction
  • Chemical waste reduction

After the summarization discussions were held about the safe use of chemical materials and the threats. At the end of the meeting the national coordinator presented the topic of the next meeting.
